On July 18th, in the heatwave of the shining sun, Boston Tzu Chi volunteers came to the CMAA in Lowell, MA carrying the love and care from Master Cheng Yen and other masters. Working together, Boston Tzu Chi volunteers and Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association (CMAA) volunteers adopted the "Drive-Through" method and distributed 300 packages with instant rice, noodles, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Volunteers' loving greetings were as warm as the 90-degree temperature of the day. The friendship between Tzu Chi Boston and CMAA dated back to four years ago through the distribution of winter clothes after a fire accident. Today, the two groups of volunteers reunited during the pandemic to continue their shared mission of selfless love for communities. Upon arrival at the CMAA building, Tzu Chi volunteers were greeted by the group of energetic young volunteers from Cambodia who were eager to contribute. Using their Cambodian and English bilingual language skills to communicate with local families, these young volunteers played a tremendous role in the distribution. Tzu Chi volunteers also took advantage of this food distribution opportunity to promote the concept of vegetarianism. They explained to CAMM volunteers that being vegetarian is to care for lives and the earth. CAMM volunteers translated and communicated this message in Cambodian to local families, which was very well received. Many families agreed to support and join Tzu Chi's "Very Veggie Movement" campaign that promotes one vegetarian meal a day. Some Cambodian Buddhist elders were excited to learn that Tzu Chi is a Buddhist organization, and they happily committed themselves to eating three vegetarian meals every day. These elderly closed their palms to express gratitude to the volunteers, expressing their great pleasure to meet people who shared their beliefs. By the end of the distribution, Tzu Chi volunteers were surprised and moved that families who came to the event had together committed to eating a total of 10,560 vegetarian meals. Tzu Chi volunteers were also deeply moved by the young, passionate CAMM volunteers, who were eager to serve and give back to their community and helped drive the success of the food distribution event. Their patience and sincerity have touched every Tzu Chi volunteer's heart. Volunteers from both organizations made a wish to reunite soon after the pandemic. A Tzu Chi volunteer shared that one CAMM volunteer went to take a picture with Master Cheng Yen's photo, wearing a big, familiar smile. Isn't this the best portrayal of Master Cheng Yen's words that we should grasp every opportunity to plant a good seed.
After the food distribution, Tzu Chi volunteers prayed to send kind thoughts and blessings to every corner of the world. The pandemic has allowed love to narrow the distance between people's hearts. After a long day of collaboration, companionship, and hard work under the sun, Tzu Chi volunteers ended the event with a group picture. Everyone was laughing happily and making a heart with their hands. Giving has brought the most intense joy to everyone. In July, 2019, instant rice and noodles with love from Tzu Chi’s headquarters in Taiwan were shipped to New York Tzu Chi Office. This is the program called Tzu Chi food rescue plan amid Covid-19 following the medical supplies distribution. On June 25th, Tzu Chi Boston volunteers transported instant rice and noodles to Boston from New York on the same day. Groceries bags including fresh produce and pantry staples were packed up on July 17th, and ready to distribute on July 18th at Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association(CMAA) in the City of Lowell. A total of 300 families in need will benefited from this food rescue plan amid the pandemic. At the same time, Tzu Chi volunteers encouraged people to go vegetarian with compassion for the earth. On Saturday, July 18th, Tzu Chi Charity Volunteer Team gathered together at Tzu Chi Boston Office at 8AM. Volunteers headed to Lowell with all the food suppliers, after carefully reviewing the schedule of the day and exhorting each other with love. Tzu Chi Volunteers arrived at CMAA in the City of Lowell at 9AM. Adhering to the precautions in place to safeguard the wellness of our valued beneficiaries, face masks or other facial coverings were additionally be required. Volunteers from CMAA and Tzu Chi worked together to unload boxes of food suppliers, build a display stand, and perform their own duties. With adequate preparation and arrangements upfront, the distribution started at 10am on time even with the tight schedule. In total, 300 families received food supplies within the 3-hour food distribution from the Tzu Chi rescue food plan. At the same time, Tzu Chi volunteers promoted vegetarianism in response to Covid-19. Besides food suppliers, Tz u Chi also plans to provide financial aids for the people who are in need in the future. Tzu Chi will continue to spread love and take actions to fight against the pandemic... As the pandemic continues, Tzu Chi’s work will continue! A simple conversation connected the two islands that resulted in 4000 medical masks being delivered to Martha's Vineyard to help its residents fight against the pandemic. Carloine Reeves is a researcher on Chinese Non-Profit Organization at Harvard University. In January of this year, she and her family relocated from Boston to the family vacation home on the island. To reduce the risk of infection to the 15,000 residents on the island, they brought enough food and other groceries to last several months and also quarantined themselves for several weeks before they began to go out. While staying at home, they saw an ad from City of Chilmark requesting volunteers to purchase and deliver personal protective supplies for the elderly residents. Caroline's two sons, 16 year-old Daniel and 19 year-old Andrew Lee immediately sprang into action and began to volunteer for the community. One day, Caroline had an online meeting with Dr. Her of Tzu Chi Foundation discussing potential partnering projects. Dr. Her told her that Tzu Chi has a branch office in Boston. If there is any individual or organization that needs assistance, she's welcomed to refer to Tzu Chi. Caroline's two sons immediately said, "Yes! Yes! Yes! Martha's Vineyard!" Tzu Chi Boston branch office director Jingman Chang received a phone call from Dr. Her right away and began to communicate with Caroline through emails. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, Tzu Chi volunteers in Boston began to purchase and collect donations of disinfectant and personal protective equipment (PPE). They have made donations to Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston Medical Center and other medical facilities, helping to protect the frontline workers in the fight against the pandemic. Due to the severity of the outbreak in the northeast United States, Tzu Chi Foundation have also shipped more than one million masks and 100,000 other PPE for donation to healthcare facilities, police and firefighters, transportation workers and nursing home staff. After an understanding of Martha's Vineyard's need and the existing inventory on hand at the branch office, volunteers determined to donate 4000 masks. But the question became how to deliver these masks to the island's residents while in keeping with the social distancing guideline. Soon, through Delilah Meegan, volunteer coordinator of Chilmark, they contacted Carroll's Trucking to ship the masks to Martha's Vineyard. A local reporter got hold of the news of this shipment and reported the story. https://www.mvtimes.com/2020/04/20/one-island-another/ As the pandemic continues, Tzu Chi’s work will continue! Unfortunately, Massachusetts is also among the six worst-affected states in the country. Though Tzu Chi Boston volunteers suffer a lack of manpower, we did not stop in our daily virtual prayers for the outbreak to end. We are also working to gather medical supplies and distribute them for various groups. One of the management staff of the cardiac research department in Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Shi Xu, has asked for donations of medical supplies from the Chinese community in Boston for the medical staff in his department. After hearing about this, sister Emily Hsiao from Tzu Chi Boston personally gifted 1000 surgical masks and a multi-lingual Jing Si aphorism book to researcher Shi on April 8. Tzu Chi Boston’s charity team volunteers heard about nursing homes in Quincy and Newton needing medical supplies. On April 10, Brother Yufeng Chen represented Tzu Chi and gifted Quincy South Cove Manor with 1000 masks at the Tzu Chi Boston office. Also, we gifted The Falls at Cordingly Dam (Benchmark Senior Living) where COVID-19 has been confirmed, 500 surgical masks and 10 N95 masks. Brother Chen gifted Quincy South Cove Manor 1000 masks. Brother Chen gifted The Falls at Cordingly Dam 500 surgical masks and 10 N95 masks. Tzu Chi Boston director Sister Vickie Chang contacted the Taiwan Overseas Community Affairs Council and realized that there may be immigrants who need masks. So, brother Chen prepared 30 gift bags with 5 masks and multigrain powder for people who may need them. Brother Chen carefully packaged these gifts with his blessings for everyone. Sister Sian Ooi i from Tzu Chi Boston personally gifted 3000 surgical masks , 60 N95 masks and 50 KN95 masks to Benchmark Waltham on April 10. So they greatly appreciated the timely package. Tzu Chi is promoting a global movement to go vegetarian in fighting this pandemic. We urge everyone to change their diet and increase the number of plant-based meals in sending love for mother nature. As Tzu Chi’s founder, Dharma Master Cheng Yen repeatedly reminds us, taking a plant-based diet to stop taking lives is the answer to many issues that mankind faces, including this pandemic and the possible disasters in the future.
Also, Tzu Chi is gathering the power of prayer. Since the outbreak, Tzu Chi volunteers have been praying for everyone and every family affected. We invite everyone, regardless of your religion or faith to join us in gathering the power of kind thoughts. The more well-wishes there are, the more strength we can gather. Please learn more from tzuchi.us/coronavirus This COVID-19 pandemic has an unprecedented scale. Let us work together to safeguard our communities, our homes and provide medical supplies to the medical workers at the frontlines and support the livelihood of vulnerable low-income families. Tzu Chi Boston's COVID-19 Relief Efforts II: Striving to Flatten the Coronavirus Curve With Love4/7/2020 With the rapid spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic in the United States, Tzu Chi Boston volunteers continue to donate medical supplies and distribute hot meals to those in need. In order to spread the love and support during this time, Tzu Chi volunteers collectively collected 500 surgical masks. With the help of many other generous donors the volunteers were able to collect 1000 more masks. On March 30th, all 1500 medical masks were delivered to Cambridge Health Alliance to help overcome the shortage of medical supplies. Cambridge Health Alliance replied with sincere gratitude, saying, “Thank you very much. We are opening additional areas for treating COVID patients, so this is very timely! Facing this deteriorating situation, the Massachusetts government utilized the closed schools and sports fields as temporary emergency shelters for the homeless. On the evening of March 31, Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and Massachusetts volunteer groups MA VIAD urgently called for bedding sets for the newly established shelter in Brockton. The Tzu Chi Boston Service Center responded immediately, providing 80 blankets the next day for those in need. After the previous donations, Tzu Chi volunteers delivered more medical supplies almost non-stop. On April 1, 2000 medical masks were delivered to Carney Hospital. On April 2, 2000 medical masks were delivered to Lawrence Hospital. Also on April 2, 4000 medical masks were delivered to Boston Medical Center. On April 2, 1000 medical masks were delivered to Tufts Medical Center Asian Clinic. Tzu Chi sincerely hopes that the donated materials will alleviate the shortage of medical supplies in community hospitals. No matter how long the epidemic will last, the relay of love and kindness is unremitting. Tzu Chi Boston will step up to stem the coronavirus pandemic with their greatest effort. Let us strengthen our love and kindness to fight against the virus and hysteria. Let us join forces in this battle, contributing individual strengths to ultimately lead the world to safety and peace. With the rapid spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic in the United States, Tzu Chi volunteer Emily Xiao, who works at Brigham and Women's Hospital, has witnessed and felt an ever-rising crisis on the frontline of the epidemic. Hospitals are facing a rising demand for medical protection equipment, such as medical masks. Frontline medical workers are only distributed one medical mask daily. For the health of medical staff, Brigham and Women’s Hospital began asking for medical masks donations from the public. Upon knowing the need, Tzu Chi's Boston branch reported to the New York headquarter office right away and asked if the medical supplies prepared earlier could be donated to the hospital for backup. A consensus was soon reached to prioritize the health and safety of healthcare workers and to implement the donation immediately. Within two days, Tzu Chi Boston delivered 1,000 medical masks and 8 N95 respirators to Brigham Women’s Hospital. Meanwhile, the volunteers also presented Jing Si food products, multi-lingual Jing Si Aphorism books, Tzu Chi Monthly, and bamboo banks as tokens of gratitude to the medical staff. On March 25, volunteer Jack Huang and Vickie Chang, on behalf of Tzu Chi Foundation handed over these 1,000 medical masks to the medical staff representatives of the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Sandra Abber and Robin Lucia. On behalf of Brigham and Women’s Hospital nursing department, Sandra Abber and Robin Lucia gratefully received our donation of medical supplies. During the coronavirus outbreak, we are also caring for students in our community. On March 22nd, 2020, volunteer CaoZheng sent over protective supplies to our five Tzu Chi volunteers, to help our college student volunteers feel safer and comfort their family on the other side of the world. Two of the students were preparing to fly back to their country, so they greatly appreciated the timely package. On March 24th, a parent from Tzu Chi children Kung Fu class shared that two of his colleagues did not have any face mask to wear but had to take public transit on their daily commute. He was very worried about his colleagues’’ health. After hearing that, Tzu Chi volunteers left a package with protective masks in Tzu Chi Foundation’s mailbox for them to pick up, with no human contact involved in the act. On March 27, The Director, Hung-Wei Ou, of OCAC (Overseas Community Affairs Council Republic of China (Taiwan), Mr. Ou reported that an elder Taiwanese currently living by hererself needed some face masks. Tzu Chi volunteers reached out to the elder, sent her a package containing face masks, and helped her to purchase groceries. We give our thanks to China Gourmet Restaurant, who has been providing hot food for Tzu chi’s homeless meal distribution. During the epidemic, they are still providing hot food for lower-income families and families who are suffering from cancers. We also would like to thank other business owners who are willing to donate and help even though they have been closing their business because of the shutdown. Let’s defend ourselves from the virus with love and transform calamity into peace with kindness. Let’s join our forces in this battle, contributing money and physical strength, as well as anything else at our disposal so that we will ultimately prevail. Those directly affected by the disaster need you. Tzu Chi needs you. Hand in hand, we will fight against the pandemic together! We sincerely ask everyone to make a donation to overcome this pandemic as soon as possible. Donation Payable to: Tzu Chi

Jan 31, 2020, NEW YORK, NY: The Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, also known as Tzu Chi USA, has been raising funds to send medical supplies to the locked-down city of Wuhan, China, and is now expanding its aid to other cities across China currently confronting the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) epidemic. Our humanitarian fundraiser is now called “Providing Relief During the New Coronavirus Outbreak.” The essential supplies provided by Tzu Chi through this fundraiser will directly aid the doctors, nurses, and hospitals diligently tending to patients across China while endeavoring to keep others safe.
The situation is currently severe with an increasing death toll and has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization. In fact, the 2019 Novel Coronavirus has caused the shut down of intercity travel to and from major cities in China as well as many forms of international travel. Medical centers across the country, too, are inundated with patients being treated for potential symptoms. Given the rapid escalation of the situation, Tzu Chi USA is requesting donations that will directly help purchase and ship the following medical supplies and materials:
By Ella Tian& Jinger Ning Dharma Master Cheng Yen says, "Sincerity, uprightness, faith, and steadfastness are our nourishing ground, while loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity are our smoothing breeze." With the theme of gratitude, respect, love, and sympathy, the 2020 Annual Lunar New Year Blessing Ceremony was held at the Tzu Chi Boston Office on January 18th. The event kicked off with the performance of students in the martial art and Tai Chi classes, visualizing the combination of beauty and strength. Following was documentary Tzu Chi Tripitaka 2019, which looked back to 2019 on Tzu Chi volunteers dedicated themselves to relieve suffering regardless of race, religion, and nationality with a generous heart. The footprints of love are across the continent: Africa, Myanmar, the United States, Jordan, Turkey, and many other places. Many in the audience were moved by the loving acts of Tzu Chi volunteers and spotted wiping away tears during the screening. After the documentary, fourteen Tzu Chi volunteers presented a sign language interpretation of "Love Heals the World," after which three other volunteers gave a performance of "A Kind World "eulogizing Tzu Chi's spirit of Great Love, filling the venue with love in the hearts of the audience. Under the lead of Tzu Chi volunteers, everyone lit up their candles, which symboled lighting up our hearts inside while illuminating others. Everyone prayed for the continuity of the circle of love holding up the lit candles. At the end of the event, everyone received a "red envelope of blessings and wisdom," a gift of gratitude and blessing from Dharma Master Cheng Yen, a wish that everyone's mind is pure and clean and would live a life with beauty and goodness. The event concluded with a hearty vegetarian dinner. Recyclable tableware was used to remind our respoinsibliies for our planet and resources. Before leaving, everyone received blessing bags and exquisite paper-cuts for the year of the mouse, representing the wish for a year of positivity and grace. Photograph: Zhenlin Weng |
